Confitional Show Field by Variable Set

Is this possible:

I would like to set a variable when a user logs in to the website. Then when they fill out a form if that variable is set to a certain string I would like to hide a field.

I know how to set an iphorm value in the functions file for use in my forms but how can I conditionally hide a field depending on what that value is.

Possible?
