Adding MailChimp subscribers from Quform – Child Theme – functions.php

In regards to the functions.php file:

Where do I put the functions.php file if I am using the Child Theme?
Won’t it be deleted when a theme update occurs if it’s placed in parent theme folder?

I am using Avada Theme v 3.3.1, WordPress 3.8.1

As of now it’s not working for me.
