alternative to fullscreen image

Hi

I am trying to redirect a Portfolio THUMBNAIL click to a new HTML rather than the fullscreen image that is usually displayed. How can I do this?

I suspect the main change would be to this line in the ‘portfolio content’ section of the code;

<a href="images/portfolio/fullscreen/placeholder.jpg" rel="portfolio">
                                <img src="images/portfolio/2column/placeholder.png" alt="" /> 

ie I wish it to open a new html (which will be a my own method of a zoomable version of the fullscreen image) and when exited, go back to the portfolio thumbnails.

Hope this is clear and if anyone can help would be grateful.
