Hi – I am getting the “an error occurred while submitting form” message after someone submits the form and cannot figure out why. The forms use Gmail/SMPT.

    I checked the following:
Gmail settings including port, SMPT, SSL etc. all fine.
Using static e-mail address in forms
Verified that server has Open SSL and no blocked ports
    Individual form settings
Gmail password (is correct and receives and sends e-mail)

Tried the WP SMTP plugin, but it fails to work
Created a debug log and it returns an error of: PHP Fatal error: Uncaught exception ‘phpmailerException’ with message ‘SMTP connect() failed

    Please help, thanks!

Thanks Ally. I have tried those steps and settings, but I still get the same error message. I talked with hostgator yesterday and they said that no ports were blocked.

These forms are important to my client’s business, so continued help is appreciated.
