Limit number of checkboxes selected

Hi,

Is there a simple way to validate how many checkboxes a user has selected for a particular question? I would like to be able to limit them to not select more than 3 for example and have a validation message come up next to the question if more than that is selected when you submit the form.

Thanks, I see the example is for the WordPress version and I am using the PHP version but presumably the custom validator code is similar.
