Odd Handling of Columns for Checkboxes

I am having trouble creating 5 columns of checkboxes. I have a list of 30 checkboxes within a group. No matter what I do, I cannot force the checkboxes into columns. If I go to the checkboxes settings, I can choose inline, but that does not give me an exact # of checkboxes per row. Also, if I go to the group settings and change the # of columns, it does not change the # of columns for checkboxes.

Can you please provide a workaround?
