Validating Digits as currency?

I have a single line text field and I need the submission to handle a digits validator but with an US currency format of 1234.56

I am not as concerned about prepopulating with an actual currency symbol ($) but, I need the dot and two additional digits. I tried just a digits validator but if you put in a period it rejects it.
